What is an APA-Accredited PsyD Program?

An APA-accredited PsyD program is one that has gone through the process of obtaining accreditation status by the American Psychological Association. A PsyD program is defined as a doctorate in professional psychology. It is one of the highest psychology degrees that one can earn. This degree is a little different from a PhD in Psychology, which is defined by obtaining a philosophy doctorate degree with a specialization in clinical psychology. The important difference between the two degrees is that a PsyD focuses more on clinical practice, meaning that a psychologist with this degree will work more with clients by providing them with therapy, assessing, and diagnosing them. Meanwhile, someone with a PhD in psychology might end up teaching at a university, and/or conducting research.

Why Choose an APA-Accredited School for My PsyD Program?

APA accreditation means that a program has proven that they meet high standards for training for those who will be delivering a psychological service, including in terms of ethics and skill. Licensing boards and states prefer that one has received their education through an accredited program. Having APA accreditation means that a licensed psychologist may have an easier time renewing their license if they move between states, as the APA provides consistency in quality in programs across the country.

APA PysD Program Licensure Steps

Each state may have slightly different steps for how one can obtain their PsyD psychology license. However, the same steps generally apply across the United States due to standards set by the American Psychological Association.

  1. Earn a bachelor’s degree from an APA accredited institution. This degree should be in psychology or another related field. Some programs may wish for you to have earned some graduate credits before applying for your PsyD program.
  2. Apply to a PsyD program. Steps for this are outlined below. This step generally takes around 4-5 years.
  3. Complete a dissertation and internship. While in your PsyD program, prior to graduation, you will complete an internship that usually lasts about one year as well as a dissertation. This internship allows you to practice your clinical skills while under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. A dissertation for a PsyD is an original exploration of a clinical psychology topic to prove your knowledge and demonstrate unique insight.
  4. Take the psychologist licensure exam. This exam is given by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. Registration can be done on their website, and a handbook for preparation can be found there as well.
  5. Apply for licensure. In this step, you will submit your state’s required information. In this step, you may also undergo a background check.
  6. Receive your license.

Requirements to Enroll in an APA-Accredited PsyD Program

Each university and college may have different requirements for applying for their PsyD programs. Even so, there are a few general materials and steps that you should expect across the board to be prepared.

  1. University application and fee. Each school will have its own unique application, and, often, a fee to go along with it. Sometimes, you can get the fee waived on a case-by-case basis.
  2. Unofficial transcripts from where you received your previous degree. Universities generally want to see that you maintained a decent GPA at your previous school to ensure that you can maintain academic success if you are allowed into the PsyD program.
  3. Letters of reference. Schools usually require three letters from professionals that you have had a relationship with, and often at least one of them should be on an academic level, such as a professor. Others might be from employers.
  4. GRE. This test is being phased out by quite a few schools, but some universities may require you to take the Graduate Record Examination and send in your scores.

APA-Accredited PsyD Program Scholarships and Grants

Part of the benefits of pursuing a high level degree such as a PsyD is that, for many universities, there is often a lot of financial assistance available directly through the university. When you are looking into each school and program that you are interested in, it can be very beneficial to ask them what is available to you. The grants and stipends often increase the longer you remain in the program in good standing.

The main psychology accrediting institution, the American Psychological Association, also features information about funding for students through the APF—American Psychological Foundation. There are multiple scholarships and grants available through this foundation for PsyD students.

There are also other websites that provide general information about scholarships available for psychology students, such as:
